Jewelry Around the World- Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month
The Hispanic-Latino community is a prevalent one in New York City and the United States. It finds its way onto every street and corner. As a result, the community slowly has impacted fashion and accessorizing. In today’s blog post, we will commemorate them by talking about the different jewelry that originates from or is inspired by Latin America.
Mexico
To begin, let us start with Mexico, where “The Homeland is First.” Catholicism is an extremely important aspect of Mexican Culture. Therefore it is very common to see gold chain necklaces with charms on the center. Specifically, with engraved images of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary, or “Virgencita” is a monumental figure, revered by the Mexican people. Gemstone mining also plays a part in Mexican economy, housing beautiful amethysts and topazes in the city of Chihuahua.
Puerto Rico
Now moving south, we shall cover the country of Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans believe that their country is a very important aspect of their lives. To illustrate, many like to refer themselves as “Boricuas”, displaying their pride through their accessorizing. With a more cloth approach, woven bracelets and anklets with text or insignia is an often seen look. With visible flags and colors, you are sure to spot a boricua by what they are wearing.
Peru and Ecuador
Finally let’s talk about Peru and Ecuador. We will elaborate of not current cultural trends, but Incan trends. The Incas once inhabited these location and although they are not around, they left their mark. Gold was in abundance in these areas, therefore metal work was not uncommon. Often master craters were in charge of making masks and rings with the metals mined in the surrounding areas, resulting in beautiful pieces for higher ups to enjoy.
We wish everyone a Happy Hispanic-Latino heritage month!
