Gemstone of the Month- October

Leaves are falling, and the jackets are starting to come out the closet. October is starting to rush in with cool weather, which is perfect for us to introduce even cooler gemstones. This month houses the vibrant opal, found in categories such as: common, or precious. Common opals do not display the signature look of precious ones. Common opals are rough and monochromatic in its exterior, but can still be found in a variety of pastel colors. In precious opals, the stones reflects a chromatic spectrum, known as “play-of-colors.” With this play of colors, you can see a variety of  light reflected, giving it the iridescent look. A precious opal benefits from cuts that exemplify this “play of colors”. There are relatively delicate and transparent ones are considered more valuable due to its opacity.

The history of the opal dates back thousands of years ago.  Australian aboriginals believed opals would represent the footsteps of Earth’s creator. On the other side of the world, Arabic folklore said that these stones fell as lightning would. Unfortunately, during the early 19th century, literature gave the gemstone a poor reputation. People would think that they brought bad luck and refused to purchase them. These sales plummeted in Europe and did not rise until mid to late 19th century. Australia’s opal mining brought about its revival, with the most valuable found in 1956.
