Adamant Showcase- Dia De los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
The spooky season has slowly crept up on the city of New York. Known for its inhabitants from all around the world, Halloween isn’t the only holiday you might see here. Specifically, The Day of the Dead, or “Dia De los Muertos, falls on October 31st until November 2nd. Latino, particularly Mexican, people celebrate this holiday in commemoration of their dead loved ones. Although out lookers might interpret it as a depressing day, it is anything but that. Moreover, Families create offering tables (Ofrendas) filled with objects related to deceased family members. Alongside them are sugary skeletal shaped pastries, and paper based decorations. Finally, topped with framed photos of the now gone family.
With holidays comes fashion and accessorizing. Individuals celebrating tend to dress up as popular death symbol “La Catrina.” Jose Guadalupe Posada made this character as a symbol of death. These costumes tend to have elaborate skirts with flower based head pieces. The colors are very bright and saturated. Many people apply makeup in order to resemble a skeleton. They paint monochromatic bases with colorful accents. Because sugar skulls are important iconography in The Day of the Dead, they even appear on jewelry; featuring in the forms of charms on gold necklaces or bracelets.
